Highlights
This tour in the west of the country between Siem Reap and Battambang is suitable for everyone. It includes relatively short and winding routes, as well as longer and faster ones. From waterfalls in the middle of the jungle to temples sometimes ignored by mass tourism, this tour is an immersion in authentic Cambodia. |
Many interesting places punctuate the journey daily, ranging from isolated archaeological sites to waterfalls in rural areas where you can meet the locals. The circuit is a mixture of asphalt and laterite roads, secondary roads, and winding roads, with some short climbs of mountains and hills, which are rare in this flat Asian country.

Important information: This first day we are not driving.
If you have already been in Cambodia for a few days to explore the top 10 of the Angkor site, we can book a few additional nights at the hotel we have chosen for you. This will allow you to relax and enjoy your time in Cambodia even more. |
DAY 1 | SIEM REAP TO BATTAMBANG | 265KM
We start our journey after breakfast, departing from Siem Reap, which we will return to at the end of our tour.
Our first route takes us along the national road, but we opt for the secondary road network, which is much more interesting and surprising. A break in the countryside, not far from a pagoda, is the perfect opportunity to enjoy a local coffee or a coconut. Our journey continues as we take the Ants' Route, an ideal playground for those who want to take a few twists and turns with a smile, but at a moderate pace so as not to miss the scenery and one of the prettiest pagodas in the province (Wat Kchas), where we make a stop.
|
The last leg of our morning journey is a section of the national road that takes us to the centre of Battambang.
After lunch, we head out of the city and onto small paths that wind along canals, contrasting with the bamboo train tracks that we have the opportunity to try out. Our journey then turns west, crossing rice fields to reach one of the largest reservoirs in the country. This is a chance to take a break and enjoy the view of this vast expanse of water. Finally, our day cannot end without a visit to Phnom Sampov. These famous hills are home to the remains of a battlefield, a pagoda that is a maze of hidden passages, and caves that shelter millions of bats. The bats emerge at dusk, putting on a spectacular show that marks the end of our day's journey. Our room awaits us not far away, in Battambang. |
DAY 2 | BATTAMBANG TO PAILIN | 195KM
Our morning departure allows us to make a stop at Phnom Banan, a hill known for its thousand-year-old temple that clings to its summit.
Our second leg of the journey then continues overland to a waterfall that can be reached after a brisk 30-minute walk through the jungle. The wooden structures at the entrance provide shelter from the sun or rain, and we can relax in hammocks not far from the motorcycles that await us. |
We continue our journey along an asphalt road in the Samlout Valley, followed by some dirt roads in the hilly countryside before Pailin. This is where we reach our final destination for the day.
For those who have not yet had enough of waterfalls, the majestic Phnom Kiev can be visited before nightfall. Dinner can be served in an outdoor restaurant on the West Hill of Pailin. The atmosphere is very local, with live music.
|
Note: In case of rain, the waterfalls can be quite difficult to access with mud. However, there are other routes to other waterfalls.
DAY 3 | PAILIN TO SAMRAONG | 290KM
This day is the longest leg of the tour, on rather fast secondary roads.
We make a stop in Phnom Proek to discover this small town near Thailand. This is an opportunity to discover a small waterfall not far from the caves. Our second leg takes us through Sisophon for lunch and a moment of relaxation. In the early afternoon, the road continues to Banteay Chhmar, where there is a temple that many tourists who prefer Siem Reap miss. It is a major temple with many reconstructions of bas-reliefs. We reach comfortable bungalows not far from Samraong to spend the night.
|
DAY 4 | BACK TO SIEM REAP | 250KM
We sleep as much as we need to before resuming our journey on a rather long leg of the trip, along pretty, generally deserted, and fast departmental roads.
We linger in Anlong Veng to rest and eat a local dish. On our way back south, we venture around Traoŭv Kôt for a break by the lake. We can also take a break at the nearby Chaw Srei Vibol Temple before heading to our final destination in Siem Reap. This last evening, we enjoy a massage that is offered to us. We can then improvise the rest of the evening, as it is our last moment together.
